amazing grass products

A few months ago, the wonderful folks at Amazing Grass sent me some samples of their protein powder and bars to try out.

I already knew that I love Amazing Grass products, but I was really excited to try out the new Vanilla Chai flavor!

If you are not familiar with Amazing Grass products, they have a variety of protein powders, superfood powders and energy bars.  Each of their products contain plant based mixes of whole fruits and vegetables that allow you to easily get some green nutrition every day.

Personally, I prefer to get my nutrients from the actual foods – eating whole veggies, fruits, etc – but, I love these Amazing Grass products when I am on the go or running out the door and don’t have a chance to eat as many fruits and veggies that day.  I always pack a few packets with me to take on vacation, like I did when we went to Florida last week.  Mixed with milk or water, they make a great post-workout snack or a regular snack while on the go.

From the Amazing Grass website:

Amazing Grass Green SuperFood is a perfect blend of alkalizing greens, antioxidant rich whole food fruits and vegetables, immune boosting support herbs, and friendly pre & probiotics. Our powder mixes so easily with water; you’ll wonder how essential green nutrition could taste this good.

The green superfood definitely tastes, well, green!  To me, I don’t love the taste alone, but mixed with a smoothie, I can hardly taste it!  Luckily, there are a variety of flavors to choose from – chocolate and berry are my favorite.  The chocolate mixed with 8oz of milk tastes like chocolate milk (with a green kick!). 🙂  It also makes you feel great and gives you a boost of energy if needed.

Amazing Meal

From the Amazing Grass website:

Amazing Meal is a powerful and satisfying blend of Green SuperFoods, plant based protein, phytonutrient rich fruits & vegetables, digestive enzymes and probiotics. The way Mother Nature intended…Organic, Raw and Delicious.

The ‘meal’ powders are my absolute favorite, especially the chocolate!  Mixed with milk and a banana (and blended), it makes an amazing meal on the go.  Chocolatey and delicious, and barely any grassy flavor.  I made one of these smoothies everyday in Florida and it was great.  It gave me plenty of protein, fruit, greens and dairy to start my day refreshed and energized.

The new Vanilla Chai flavor is delicious!

It does contain stevia, which I don’t love due to the taste, but when mixed into a smoothie, I can barely taste it.  I have been mixing this flavor into any type of smoothie, but I particularly love it mixed with cherries!  Cherry Vanilla Chai – yum!

Energy Bars

From the Amazing Grass website:

Our certified Organic Green SuperFood Energy Bars feature a premium blend of nature’s most nourishing and delicious SuperFoods. The energy bars provide health conscious consumers with a more potent, convenient and affordable way to satisfy their hunger and deliver nutrients to their bodies the way Mother Nature intended – unprocessed, organic and delicious.

We’ve combined our best-selling and alkalizing Organic Green SuperFood drink powder with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables to create a delicious and healthy treat. Loaded with nutritious organic nuts and seeds…

I was definitely a little skeptical about these bars!  I mean, I didn’t want to eat a bar that tasted like greens…that didn’t seem like fun!  But, I was pleasantly surprised. They have a good, normal bar texture and have a little crunch to them.  My favorite is by far the Chocolate Peanut Butter.  And, I love that they contain all natural and organic real foods mixed up into the bar.  Some bars on the market these days are basically candy bars!

Overall, I love the Amazing Grass products!  I have since found their products are Whole Foods and other Natural Food stores.  They are a little pricey, but you pay for what you get.  These powders and bars don’t contain any fillers, so you are paying for real whole foods (in powder and bar form!). 🙂

Thanks, Amazing Grass for sending me these awesome products!

on-the-go snacks

It was SO hot out yesterday!  And, it seems like this weekend isn’t going to be ANY better.

I was on-the-go all day long, so I needed some healthy and portable to-go snacks.

I felt like heading out for a run in the morning, but once I stepped outside I knew the air-conditioned gym would be a better idea. 🙂

Before I left, I mixed up a delicious concoction of Lemon-Lime Amazing Grass + Lemon Lime O.N.E. Coconut Water + a splash of water.

I added 1 scoop of the Amazing Grass to my shaker and filled it up with 6 oz. coconut water + 2 oz. water.

It was good!  Very lime-y.

I also grabbed a Heaven GloBar.  I loved this flavor because of all of the coconutty flavor!

This new Amazing Grass makes me feel great.  It leaves me feeling energized without drinking caffeine.  I love it.  And, mixed with this new Lemon Lime Coconut Water from O.N.E. made it taste even better!

I received a few samples of their new coconut water flavors from O.N.E., including this Lemon Lime.  They came out with 3 Active flavors that contain coconut water along with a mix of natural energizers that help replenish you before, during and after a workout.  My initial thought about the Lemon Lime was that it tasted too sweet, but mixed with a little water before my workout, it tasted great.  After my workout, the sweetness was perfect!

I got to the gym and started with a 5 minute warm-up walk on the treadmill, then hit the weights circuit style:

(3 sets of each)

  • 21’s
  • squats with overhead press
  • triceps kickbacks
  • deadlift with upright row
  • chest press
  • triceps extension

Then, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill and did a 10 minute cool-down walk.

It felt great!

Once home, I craved a smoothie – a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie!

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • 2 tbsp vanilla hemp protein powder
  • 2 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 2 tbsp cacao
  • 4 oz banana yogurt
  • 1 cup filtered water

Poured into a to-go mug to bring with my while running errands.  YUMMY!

Once I made it home, it was time to make our way down to NYC for the weekend.  I wasn’t ready for lunch yet and I knew we would be having dinner upon arrival, so I packed a few road trip snacks.

Avocados travel very easily.

Just cut it in half and remove the pit before packing.  Bring along some spices to sprinkle on it and pack a spoon!  Then, enjoy on the road.

Homemade juice also travels easy.  Just make your juice (and clean the juicer before leaving!) and pour it into a glass smoothie cup for easy travel.  This way you can throw it in a bag and not worry about it spilling all over.

In the juice:

  • 5-6 celery stalks
  • handful carrot tops
  • 4 small carrots
  • 1 knob ginger
  • 2 small apples
  • 2 small beets

Deliciousness. 🙂

I also packed a container of pre-cooked lentils and a fork.

All together – juice, avocado, lentils – this made a decent meal and kept me occupied on our drive.

Off to explore, have a great weekend!

manna bread & mangoes

It’s a gorgeous day in Boston, even though it is much colder than I would like it to be!  I love getting my weekend days started early because I feel so much more productive.  My plan was to hit the gym to get a weight session in after a 2 week hiatus.  I ate some toast with almond butter beforehand in order to fuel up with carbs before working out.

This wasn’t just any toast with AB!  I spotted some Manna Bread in the freezer case at my local health food store last week when I was looking for Millet bread and I decided to try it out.  I tried their new flavor –Banana Walnut Hemp.

I had read about this bread on some blogs and in some magazines, so I knew that it was a sprouted bread, but I had no idea what it would taste like.  On their website they describe Manna Bread as a cake-like, sprouted bread, free of salt, no oils, no sweeteners, no leavening agents.  The ingredient list is awesome!

Ingredients: sprouted organic wheat kernels, filtered water, organic dried bananas, organic walnuts, organic flaxseeds, organic hemp seeds.

The loaf is small, but definitely filling (which I discovered this morning).  It is almost smaller than my hand!

Since the loaf is frozen, I popped the entire thing in the microwave for 30 seconds.  I was able to cut off a few slices without having the whole loaf defrost.  This is loaded with bananas and walnuts!

I toasted the bread and topped it with a little almond butter for staying power at the gym.  This bread was absolutely delicious!  It was moist and flavorful, unlike the Ezekiel bread that I sometimes buy.  Each loaf has 6 servings, which each contain 140 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbs, 12 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein.  Spread with a little nut butter makes this a great snack!  I will absolutely buy this again, and I can’t wait to try other flavors because they sound delicious – Carrot Raisin, Cinnamon Date, Fig Fennel Flax, Fruit and Nut, Millet Rice, Multigrain, Sunseed and Whole Rye.  They all sound out of this world!  YUM.

Anyways, enough about bread and on to my awesome workout.

I started with a total body weight session (about 35 minutes), which felt awesome after about 2 weeks off.  I do my full body weights as circuits in order to burn more calories while lifting weights.  Plus, it keeps it more interesting!

Total Body Weight Session

  • 21’s (3 sets, 18 lb bar)
  • Deadlifts with upright row (3 sets of 12, 18 lb bar)
  • Chest press on bench (12.5 lb, 3 sets of 12) with Bicycle Crunches (3 sets of 15)
  • Squats with overhead press (10 lb weights, 3 sets of 12)
  • Lunges with side lift alternating with lunges with front raise (7.5 lb weights, 3 sets of 12 each leg)
  • Triceps extension (10 lb weight, 3 sets of 12) with Triceps dip (3 sets of 12)
  • Crunches on a ball (3 sets of 15) with Fly on ball (7.5 lb weights, 3 sets of 12)
  • Triceps pullback on ball (12.5 lb weights, 3 sets of 12) with Frog crunches (3 sets of 15)

I followed my weights session with a 5 mile easy run on the treadmill.  It felt awesome to run, but my legs still do feel a little tired.  I plan to take it easy for the next week as well because they do say to do easy workouts for 13 days after a Half Marathon (1 day for each mile run).  I can’t wait to fit in some more swimming and spinning next week.

After the gym, I whipped up a fruit & protein smoothie for recovery.  The star of the show was a Mango Amazing Meal packet.  I really like the Amazing Grass products.  This meal packet contains lots of green superfoods, plant based protein, phytonutrient rich fruits & vegetables, digestive enzymes and probiotics.  Everything that your body needs!  The 10 grams of protein in the packet make it a good post workout snack.  It contains 110 calories, so you could just mix this up with water or milk to get your protein.  I just like to add more to my smoothies to make them more filling!

And, some frozen fruit.

Mango-Strawberry Protein Smoothie

  • 1 packed Pomegranate Mango Amazing Meal
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 8 frozen strawberries (on the small side)
  • 1 cup almond milk

It was very good!  It had a very strong mango flavor with just a hint of berry.

I’m planning on some beet salad from last night on a bed of greens for lunch (the smoothie was awesome, but I’m already hungry again!), some study time, and then a fun beer tasting this afternoon!

See ya!
